You should always have references available. Make sure yours are ready to go before heading into the interview.

At some point during your job search, a potential employer will request skilled references. It is vital to be organized to provide a list of references who can speak to the skills and qualifications that you have for the job for which you are applying. A potential employer should ask your consent before contacting any of your references. It is acceptable to say that you are not comfortable with your current employer being contacted at the present time. Have a list of alternative references available.

There are some things to consider:

  • Keep a list of references you can use. You will need to present various references depending upon the position and employer you are following.
  • Present a reference sheet listing former supervisors, co-workers, vendors, or other contacts from work.
  • List the name of the reference, title, organization, address, and phone number. Make sure you provide the proper acknowledgment (e.g., Dr., Ms.).
  • Many employers will not be interested in reference letters although it is a good idea to have some.
